LOGOS TRADING POST - FIRST COMMUNION GIFTS
The Story of the First Communion
Matthew 26:26-28 says, “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” This, of course, is Christ establishing communion as we see it today.
Of course, an aspect of what he was getting at is the foreshadowing of His crucifixion and all that it would accomplish. By the sacrifice of His flesh and the spilling of His blood, we get to experience the forgiveness of sins. It was a brutal death, deserved by us and not Him, being completely without sin for all of His life. Still, he paid the price for us. Saint Paul tells us in Romans 6:20-23, “For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our price became His; by His sacrifice on our behalf, we can not only live, but live in righteousness, free from sin! We are sanctified.
Our sanctification, then, is a precious gift, that we ought to celebrate the opportunity to possess. In celebration, albeit Holy and reverent celebration, we continue the tradition of communion as demonstrated in Matthew 26.
Communion Now
These days, in honor of the body that Jesus sacrificed and the blood He spilled on our behalf, many believers often partake in the breaking of bread and the drinking of wine when they gather as the Church - or wafers and grape juice for some brothers and sisters! In this moment of eating and drinking together in unity, it is important that an attitude of reverence and worship be maintained. Though we do have the context as modern believers who already know Jesus was to be raised from the dead in three days’ time, we can’t forget that His death and His pain were very real and very tragic. Therefore, holy communion is an act that aligns the posture of our hearts with the will of God, but it is also an act of worship unto Christ, who was willing to make His sacrifice of crucifixion. After all, Saint Paul speaks of Christ’s willingness in Philippians 2:4-8, in which he writes, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God as a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” His death was by crucifixion, but He was willing to humble himself for the others’ needs, our needs, and face it boldly. Let us remember that as we take of His flesh and blood in communion.\
The Significance of First Communion
All of this in mind, there’s no doubt it is especially significant when a child in the Church partakes of their first communion. Now yes, in many cases, such children are born into the homes of believers, being raised by faithful parents and being trained in the truths of the scriptures. That said, a first communion is the first exposure for a young believer to the sacrifice of Christ’s crucifixion in a way that they can feel directly. It is one thing to have knowledge that He was “wounded for our transgressions” and “crushed for our iniquities,” as the prophet Isaiah tells us in Isaiah 53:5, but it is another to actually “eat of His body” and “drink of His blood.”
This first taking of communion ought to bring someone first closer to Christ and second closer to the Church in a very real way, and as such - though a serious and reverent act in the moment - is an occasion worthy of grand celebration! Some traditions within the Church go to great lengths to enact this celebration, throwing parties and giving the young believer a great many First communion gifts, echoing the celebration of the saints and the hosts of Heaven.
